Yesterday, getting totally bored with the seasonal cutting and snipping in the garden, I decided to take my camera somewhere - but where? Difficult time of the year for birding - most birders that I know concentrate on butterflies and moths but somehow, from a photographic point of view, that has never floated my boat.

Anyway, with nothing around locally, I decided to go to the Suffolk Wildlife Trust reserve at Lackford lakes for an hour or three. Kingfishers are usually good photographic subjects here and, although I already have loads of images of the species, there is something so photogenic about them that trying for even better shots is never a hardship.

First hide (Bernards Hide) nothing - the main hide (Double Decker Hide- nothing after an hour or so. Moved to the small hide (Reed Hide). still nothing. This was getting to be a disappintment so I retraced my steps to the double decked hide and patiently waited, watching a couple of Moorhens going about their business.

Still nothing so I decided to go home and made my way towards Bills Hide and the car. Passing Reed Hide, I thought it worth a quick look and - BINGO - there was a female Kingfisher nicely perched. It was not in the least concerned with me opening the window and setting up but after a few images, it flew off.
