Yesterday, with the sun shining and a beautiful day in prospect, I went to Grafham Water to see if a couple of rarities were photographable. The short answer - no. Longtailed Duck in the middle of the water, no sign of the Black-necked Grebes but at least a Pied Wagtail posed on a post for a decent image.

With nothing of interest, I made my way to Paxton Pits NR. This reserve has always been a favoutite of mine but I haven't been there for a time and was very diappointed. No birds and what parts of the reserve I saw reminded me of a waste tip. Feeders all empty too so I left.

On my way hone, I drove through Fen Drayton Lakes RSPB, not expecting anything of interest and was not disappointed. I parked at the top end overlooking an open space and was surprised to see a family of Carrion Crows on the ground. What transpired then amazed me.

These three youngsters were being very vocal but then grouped near a bush, going very quiet.

After a few seconds, one of the adults walked round the corner and was immediately set upon by them, giving it a mild going over before running away cawing to themselves. I know they are very intelligent but do they engage in childish pranks? - it certainly appeared so.

After that, the only movement of birds was Wood Pigeons flying past to roost so I amused myself with attempts at flight shots.

It is amazing how quickly they take evasive action as soon as they see a camera pointed at them. Perhaps they think it is a super sized 12 bore!!!
