A juvenile Great Skua (Bonxie) has been present at Grafham Water for the past few days so, prompted by a report that it was seen close to the south side of the dam at 8.30am, I decided to see if there were any photographic opportunities.
I arrived at the dam at 9.30 but no sign. I walked the full length of the dam and back, still no sign but saw a birder with scope at the south end and asked if he had seen it. He had been watching it from Mander car park in the middle of the reservoir, fighting with and killing a Herring Gull and showed it to me in his scope on the far side drfiting with the wind into the north shore.
My search on the north shore was fruitless so I drove to Mander car park. No Bonxie but a juvenile Little Gull was feeding close in so I spent an hour or so trying to photograph it - not easy due to the strongish gusty wind and the very erratic flight behaviour.
The net result was quite pleasing
Still no sign of the Skua so I left at lunchtime and de-camped to Welney WWT. Report on that later.
More Little Gull images in the Recent Additions section.
