This trip was to try to photograph the Short-eared Owls that were, apparently, showing over Lady Fen. Well they didn't despite a full afternoon waiting with nothing else to occupy me ecept for a lone Barn Owl that appeared just as the light was fading.
Prior to that, I spent a couple of hours in the main observatory hide, this time concentrating on flight shots.
Pochard
Wigeon
Mute Swan
and a juvenile Whooper Swan
In fact, the Whooper came so close. I was able to get a head shot.
The only other bird of note was a Kestrel that hovered in front of the hide.
One fascinating episode was a female Marsh Harrier that was hunting a Pochard way out on the washes and too distant for a photo to publish here. Everytime the Pochard dived, the Harrier hovered waiting for it to surface. After 15 minutes or so, with the Pochard worn out, the Harrier caught it by the neck, dragged it to land, killed it and started to feed. 100 yards or so closer and I could have got some good shots but that is wildlife for you.
