Hearing from a friend that a juvenile Rough-legged Buzzard was showing consistently just over the county border in Herts, last Wednesday I decided to see for myself. After last Monday's disappointments, surely things must improve.
Following directions, I soon found the parking place overlooking the valley and waited.
The first signs of life was a Common Buzzard being mobbed by a couple of crows forcing it in my general direction. Well it wasn't a Rough-legged variety (although at first sight I thought it was) and took advantage of the opportunity.

The Rough-Legged Buzzard then showed and started to hunt, way down the valley and too distant for any meaningful photography. Well patience is a virue so I waited, had my lunch and waited some more, most of the time with the bird in view but distant.
Finally it moved closer for some long range shots.
Shortly afterwards, it flew off North and did not return.
A Red Kite graced the waiting crowd with a brief flypast in the afternoon sun.
By this time, cloud was coming in and the light was fading so I went home.
The bird is still being reported in the same location now - probably it is set to overwinter so I think another visit is due. The trip to Canon Elstree for matching will have to wait!!!
Considering the distance of these shots and the heavy cropping, I thought that the 7D MK2 passed this test OK, certainly better than my old 7D would have done in similar circumstances - another tick in its favour.
