Wednesday 31st October 2012

Yesterday promised to be the best day of the week for weather so I decided to drive to the Cley area of Norfolk, especially Salthouse. It has proved to be excellent for bird photography over the past few years.

Driving through fog and mist was not a good omen and it was still grey and dull on arrival at Salthouse at 9.00am. About 20 or so Turnstones as usual with several bathing. Interesting to watch and to photograph.

And then the sun started to come out, and so did the people. It was as busy as a summer weekend. Well, it was half-term!!! No birds on the pools. One last shot of a Redshank made a colourful image and then time to go.

Surprisingly, the car park at Cley marshes was full so I headed West along the coast road. The first quiet spot was the East Quay at Wells. The tide was out leaving uncovered mud flats with an adult Great Black-backed Gull conveniently showing. Not exciting but I have wanted decent portraits of this species for some time.

Some Herring Gulls were arguing over the eating rights to a crab

Nothing more of interest so time to move on. Having been warned that the water levels at Titchwell RSPB were much too high on the lagoons, I went straight to Thornham until the early sunset. Once again, too many people but a Bar-tailed-Godwit was foraging in the creek in the evening light.
